.The bridal dress that Nancy Shevell wore to marry Paul McCartney seemed like a simple and classic design.

The custom dress designed by Stella McCartney for Shevell came with some serious historic inspiration.

Barbara Walters and People Magazine both revealed the inspiration for the dress came from Wallis Simpson. Simpson married the Duke of Windsor in a similar bridal design which included several details that we saw in the McCartney dress.

The design incorporated the same bustline pleating, covered buttons and cinched in waist panel. Wallis's design was created by Paris couturier Mainbocher. The dress Simpson wore had a higher neckline and a longer length. She also selected a shade of blue rather than ivory. It is easy to see the similarities when comparing the wedding images.

The Simpson design was gived to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1950. It has since become the inspiration for many designs
