We first caught wind of plans for a star-studded Paul McCartney tribute album back in 2012, and it looks like the epic celebration of McCartney’s songbook will finally see the light of day this year. Arctic Poppy Records will be handling the double album’s release, and while there isn’t a specific date set yet, the label’s website explains that box set and collectors editions of The Art of Paul McCartney will be out this summer, while a full scale release will be held back until fall.
A complete tracklist is still forthcoming, but among the stars slated to take a stab at Macca’s peerless songs are Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Billy Joel, Steve Miller, Willie Nelson, Jeff Lynne and Roger Daltrey.
Work from throughout McCartney’s career will be represented, with Beatles tunes like “Hey Jude” and “Drive My Car” butting up against Wings hits (“Live and Let Die”) and solo jams (“Every Night”). No word yet on who’s covering what, so just hang tight.
As for what the man himself has planned for the coming months, McCartney will kick off the Latin American leg of his ongoing “Out There” world tour in Uruguay on April 29, with dates in Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica to follow. Sir Paul will then play a few dates in Japan before playing his first ever concert in South Korea on May 28. Internet rumor has it that McCartney is on the verge of announcing a spate of North American dates for 2014, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
