Stella McCartney, the British fashion designer behind Team GB's kit, named an OBE in 2013 New Year Honours List.
Stella McCartney, the British fashion designer responsible for kitting
out Team GB athletes and countless red carpet stars alike, has rounded
off a remarkable 2012 by being awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours
List.
The mammoth task of designing over 500 individual pieces of performance
sportswear for Team GB and Paralympic GB for the London 2012 Olympic
Games - from Tom Daley's "little thing" to the tracksuits worn on the
medal podiums - provided a once in a life opportunity and unprecedented
global exposure for the 41-year-old mother of four.
McCartney's designs - created under her collaborative sportswear line
with Adidas - ensured that Team GB's athletes were the most stylish at
the games and the envy of other competing nations at the Olympic
village, many of whom were reportedly keen to swap kits.
And now she joins several other heroes of 2012 - including Bradley
Wiggins, David Brailsford, Sarah Storey, Mo Farah, and poster girls
Jessica Ennis, Victoria Pendleton and Ellie Simmonds (all three devoted
Stella McCartney fans) - in being named on the 2013 New Year Honours
list.
This latest accolade comes hot on the heels of her double win at last
month's prestigious British Fashion Awards where McCartney was named
Designer of the Year and Designer Brand of the Year for her eponymous
fashion label - a joint venture with Gucci Group PPR.
The Stella McCartney brand has gone from strength to strength in 2012
with the opening of a new store in New York's Soho; the launch of both
her latest fragrance 'L.I.L.Y', and 'Stella', a second line of everyday
lingerie; plus a childrenswear collaboration with the Mr Men team titled
Little Miss Stella.
Back in February, McCartney staged a star-studded fashion show at
London Fashion Week which included a supermodel flash-mob dance routine;
and in July she received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of
the Arts London and announced she will fund a scholarship for Central
Saint Martins MA Fashion students.
