Mary McCartney Opens First Solo Show in Germany
Mary McCartney Opens First Solo Show in Germany at Contributed, Studio for the Arts
January 24, 2011 by All Art News
BERLIN.- Mary McCartney (b 1969) started her career as a photographer in 1995. Her work is reflection not only of Marys personal world, but of the unique relationships she establishes with the people she photographs, like Kate Moss, Helen Mirren, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tracey Emin, Stella McCartney or Paul McCartney. Her first book – From Where I Stand – combines those images with places and events as seen through Marys eyes: the intimacy of backstage preparations amoung the corps de ballet at the Royal Opera House, the raw energy of fashion shows and rock concerts, both on stage and off, the private spaces of home and family and the wittily observed vignettes of visual delight. CONTRIBUTED presents the first solo show of Mary McCartney in Germany.
British photographer Mary McCartney, daughter of Linda Eastman McCartney and Paul McCartney poses for a photograph next to her photographs during the opening of the exhibition ‘From where I stood’ in the gallery Contributed in Berlin, Germany.
Mary McCartney was born in London in 1969 and started her career as a professional photographer in 1994. She has been commissioned for numerous publications including Harper’s Bazaar and Interview magazine. Her first solo exhibition Off Pointe – A Photographic Study of the Royal Ballet After Hours was shown at the Royal Opera House in 2004 before touring to Dimbola Lodge, Isle of Wight, and Crane Kalman Gallery, Brighton. Other solo exhibitions of her work have been held at OXO Tower, London, Goss-Michael Foundation, Texas, and Nunnington Hall, Yorkshire, while British Style Observed was exhibited as part of 30 days of Fashion at the Natural History Museum in 2008. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the Royal College of Art, London, The Waterfront, New York and Plymouth Arts Studio. McCartney completed a special commission for the exhibition Gay Icons in 2009 and these works, including portraits of Ian McKellen and Sandi Toksvig, are now part of the Collection at the National Portrait Gallery.
CONTRIBUTED is a platform for image worlds and their publications. CONTRIBUTED shows creative productions in a real-time relevance to their publication in the magazine, book or catalogue, thus transforming zeitgeist into perceptible art. New means of perception are developed, hype is decelerated, the photo is given body – and consequently a bit of eternity.
CONTRIBUTED was established at the beginning of 2009 as an open-framework project for fashion, design and the media, with international artists and fashion designers exhibiting their works or using the pages as a showroom. Parallel to this, there was a distinct focus on the art form of the publication. This orientation has now been followed. Since 2010, CONTRIBUTED has been working as a regular gallery, and now operates in the art market.
CONTRIBUTED is located on the south side of Strausberger Platz, the first roundabout on Karl-Marx Allee travelling from Alexanderplatz, and is accordingly in the centre of the new art district of Berlin.
