Paul McCartney's "Kisses on the Bottom" album is showing signs of being more than just a footnote on his long career, despite its whimsical title.

In its second week on the Billboard Jazz Album chart, the album jumped 17 places to the top spot on that chart. It was also labeled "Greatest Gainer." The album sat at #17 in its first week on the chart.

The album's single, "My Valentine," is sitting at #20, up from #23 last week, in its third week on the Adult Contemporary chart.

One of the two original McCartney tracks on the album is also charting in Japan, Billboard reports. "Only Our Hearts," which features Stevie Wonder on harmonica, debuted at #84 on the Japan Hot 100.

The album also debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 today at #5, #3 on the Official UK Album Chart and #4 in Canada. It's also made showings in Germany at #9 plus in Australia, Belgium, Holland, Hungary, Norway and Sweden.

Additionally, it debuted at #5 on Billboard's Digital Album Chart. It's at #12 on iTunes today, though it was #10 there on Wednesday. It's also #2 on the Billboard Tastemaker Albums Chart, just behind Van Halen's "A Different Kind of Truth" and ahead of Adele's "21."

Congratulations to Paul! His new album Kisses On The Bottom,reached the N 3 spot on his first week of release,which is quite a surprise as this was a collection of covers of old Jazz songs form the pre Rock and Roll era,and it isn't a classic Mccartney album.

Following the announcement from Buckingham Palace that Paul is set to headline the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee Concert on Monday 4th June, today sees Paul announcing his own live shows as he gets back out 'On the Run' in Europe with the all new leg of his 'On the Run' tour which kicked off last year at New York's Yankee Stadium before rocking through the US, Canada, UAE, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and ending the year with a memorable homecoming show at Liverpool's Echo Arena.

2012 marks 40 years since Paul's premier tour as a solo artist. Since then Paul has played a truly staggering range of venues and locations. From pub gigs to huge outdoor parks and stadiums; Paul has even played into Space, outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow's Red Square and at the White House to name just a few. In recent years, Paul's live shows have even acquired a new legendary status, garnering unprecedented reviews from fans and critics alike wherever he goes.

Paul first played in Holland, Switzerland and Belgium as a solo artist in 1972.

2012 also marks the 10th anniversary of Paul playing with his band. Paul McCartney Is Honored, and Puts On a Big Show, Too

There are not too many accolades left for Paul McCartney to win, but the tribute an all-star line-up of musicians paid him Friday night in Los Angeles when he was named the MusiCares Person of the Year must rank among the most heartfelt.

Mr. McCartney was the guest of honor this year at the annual gala for the charity, which is operated by the same organization that oversees the Grammy Awards – the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The dinner was held in a convention hall next to the Staples Center, where the Grammy Awards will be given out on Sunday.

Not only did a dozen top-flight musicians – many of them nominated for Grammys — perform Mr. McCartney’s songs, but the former Beatle thrilled the audience of about 2,800 people with two numbers from his recently released album of standards and a live rendition of the climactic medley near the end of the Beatles 1969 album Abbey Road. By the time Mr. McCartney sang the famous words “And in the end, the love you make is equal to the love you take,” the crowd of V.I.P.s were on their feet.

The dinner raised more than $6.5 million for the organization, which provides financial aid, drug treatment and medical care to indigent musicians, Neil Portnow, the president of the recording academy said.

The show was full of memorable performances. Foo Fighters did a hard-rock version of “Jet,” a hit from Mr. McCartney’s post-Beatles era with Wings. Katy Perry, wearing a giant rose-shaped hat, performed “Hey Jude” with acoustic instruments. Norah Jones gave “Oh, Darling” a honky-tonk flavor. Alison Krauss and Union Station did a bluegrass arrangement of “No More Lonely Nights.” Coldplay performed a joyful “We Can Work it Out” in an acoustic arrangement.

Other performances included Tony Bennett swinging a jazz version of “Here, There and Everywhere,” James Taylor singing “Yesterday,” and Alicia Keys delivering a soulful “Blackbird,” accompanying herself on the piano.

But the performance that brought the crowd to its feet and seemed to capture the rock and roll spirit of the early Beatles came from Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Mr. Young, his long grey hair spilling out from under his white hat, launched into “I Saw Her Standing There” in a loose, free style, letting the guitars ring as he sang the teenage anthem with a snarl and launched into a post-modern guitar solo in which the melody jumped, stuttered and seemed to cry out in pain. Simply put, the song rocked, sounding as if it could have been recorded yesterday.

“Paul!” Mr. Young said after he finished, raising his hand in a salute, while the crowd applauded wildly.

Accepting his award later, Mr. McCartney singled out Mr. Young as he thanked the musicians for their tributes. He said they had all found nuances in his songs he never knew were there. “For me obviously, it’s fantastic to hear all these fantastic artists singing my songs and making them sound so beautiful,” he said.

Eddie Izzard, the comedian, kept the audience in stitches in between acts with an spoof of Mr. McCartney’s biography that was riddled with absurd errors. According to Mr. Izzard, Mr. McCartney’s father was Jacques Cousteau, his mother was Catherine Hepburn and he grew up in a town called Liverpool in Ireland, or perhaps Russia, or maybe Scotland. Muhammad Ali was a member of the early Beatles who played flute and Mr. McCartney got the idea for starting Wings from Fidel Castro, who started his own band called “Beaks.” Everything in Mr. Izzard’s history happened in 1962.

At the end of his monologue, Mr. Izzard explained that people always spout a lot of nonsense at charity events, so he thought a little more nonsense would not hurt.

“For Paul McCartney, words are not needed,” he said. “The music speaks for itself.”

’ve seen a lot of MusiCares tribute shows in my time, but nothing like Friday night’s Paul McCartney extravaganza. With the main ballroom of the LA Convention Center filled well beyond capacity (2500?), producer Tommy LiPuma assembled a gang of all stars to play McCartney’s music elegantly on not one but two stages–there was a huge revolving stage in the center of the room which offered acts like Alison Krauss, and Coldplay, intimacy in the massive room.

But wait you ask–who was there? Yoko Ono in her trademark white hat sat with Paul, new wife Nancy, and son James. That’s right. No Ringo, but there was a Jack Nicholson sighting and Crole King was spotted, too. Smokey Robinson, Berry Gordy, and Suzanne dePasse represented Motown. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Steve and Maureen van Zandt, John Stamos, and Christopher Lawford added to the Hollywood quotient.

There were plenty of musicians, and not just the ones on stage. Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Valerie Simpson, Glen Campbell, Phil Ramone, David Crosby, Jeff Lynne, David Foster, Randy Jackson were in the audience. So was Piers Morgan. I’m pretty sure I saw David Geffen. LA Reid and Doug Morris were there from Sony Music, so was Martin Bandier, Paul’s music publisher. Before the show began, Paul had long talks with Gordy, with Neil Young, and so on.

It wasn’t all geezers. Katy Perry — who sang “Hey Jude” with a ”Live and Let Die” intro–donated $250,000 to MusiCares because she was so impressed with the event. She wore a gigantic white rose hat while she sang, but she was good.

The fact is, you can’t wreck a Lennon-McCartney song. On top of that, MusiCares imported actors and acrobats from Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas “Love” show to open the evening. McCartney himself played several songs like “Magical Mystery Tour” and “Junior’s Farm,” as as well as a couple of numbers from his new “Kisses on the Bottom” album of standards.

The evening took in $6 million, according to MusiCares, which helps indigent and needy musicians. It was their biggest evening ever, a spectacle befitting a Beatle.

Here’s something funny. I was ‘stuck’ at table 228–far from the front, feeling a little left out,. So who else was there? British comic Eddie Izzard. He was also hosting the show. McCartney had so liked it when Izzard hosted a memorial for Linda McCartney in London years ago, that he has asked him to come do the honors here. Izzard was brilliant. He wrote a monologue at 4am, he told us, chucking McCartney’s well known bio and giving him a good send up. It was smashing.

Some highlights: Diana Krall and James Taylor — he sang “Yesterday” while she played piano, then they switched and she did “For No One” while he played guitar. Rock legend Duane Eddy played an instrumental guitar version of “And I Love Her” that was like poetry. Tony Bennett remade “Here, There and Everywhere.” I loved Allison Krauss’s group doing “No More Lonely Nights.” Neil Young and Crazy Horse just ripped through “I Saw Her Standing There.”

More later in an update. I didn’t see Olivia Harrison. There was little to no mention of the other Beatles. I give Yoko Ono credit for sitting there, never once acknowledged. When this behemoth of a show finally came to a semi conclusion, McCartney had little to say other than thank you. He didn’t mention John Lennon. But he sang a beautifully concise new love song to his new wife, Nancy, “My Valentine.” And you realize he simply expresses himself in music. That’s his language.

Paul McCartney gets his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

There's no shortage of stars, real and imagined, visible along Hollywood's Walk of Fame, but even by Tinseltown standards, Paul McCartney ramped up the quotient Thursday in getting his own belated star.

The former Beatle drew several hundred fans who packed a cordoned-off section of Vine Street outside Capitol Records for the ceremony.

He brought several Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member pals along for the ride, including Neil Young, who gave McCartney a cheery introduction, Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh and pop music power couple Elvis Costello and Diana Krall. Jazz great Herbie Hancock was there as well as musician-producer Don Was and former Electric Light Orchestra leader/Traveling Wilburys member Jeff Lynne. McCartney's wife, Nancy, and son, James, also attended the ceremony.

"Let me tell you a little bit about our friend Paul here just as a musician," said Young, wearing a black leather Buffalo Springfield tour jacket. "When I was in high school and the Beatles came out, I loved the Beatles and I tried to learn how to play like them, and no one could figure out what Paul was doing on the bass. Not only was he playing differently because he plays left-handed, he played notes that no one had put together before -- in a way that made us stand in awe of this great musician."

"I'm so proud to be doing this," he added. "As a musician, as a songwriter, Paul's craft and his art are truly at the top of his game, the way Charlie Chaplin was an actor. He has an ability to put melodies and feelings and chords together, but it's the soul that he puts into everything he does that makes me feel so good and so happy to be here."

McCartney then stepped to the microphone and first acknowledged his debt to "three other guys -- so thanks, John, George and Ringo."

Although Starr, the only other surviving Beatle, lives in Southern California, McCartney said, "Ringo's a little under the weather, so he's not here." The comment drew sighs of disappointment from onlookers.

"When I was growing up in Liverpool and listening to Buddy Holly and the other rock 'n' roll greats, I never thought I'd ever come to get a star on the Walk of Fame," said McCartney, 69 -- a sentiment probably shared by members of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who had been after him to accept the award ever since it was approved for him in 1993. "But here we are today," he said.

"Today," not coincidentally, was the 48th anniversary of the Beatles' game-changing U.S. television debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show." The ceremony also came synergistically just two days after the release of McCartney's latest album, "Kisses on the Bottom," a collection of mostly pre-rock pop songs he loved as a child, supplemented by two originals.

Always the Beatle most attuned to business matters, he closed his succinct speech by telling fans and others "around the world that I send you all hugs and kisses on the bottom."

It's a particularly busy week for McCartney: After the star ceremony, he was slated to do a live performance in one of Capitol's recording studios to be streamed live at 7 tonight on iTunes and Apple TV. On Friday, he's the guest of honor at the Recording Academy's annual MusiCares Person of the Year all-star tribute gala and fundraiser. And Sunday, he's on tap to perform during the Grammy Awards telecast.

Many fans who showed up in Hollywood brought various bits of memorabilia in hopes of snagging an autograph: One teenage girl had a worn LP copy of his first solo album, 1970's "McCartney." Others leaned across metal police barricades with copies of "A Hard Day's Night," "Beatles for Sale," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," books, photos and a plethora of other items.

Only one succeeded: On his way back into the Capitol building, McCartney spotted Fullerton 18-year-old Paul Madariaga holding up a Hofner bass guitar like the one McCartney first popularized nearly half a century ago when he was just out of his teens. McCartney gave a nod and the instrument was handed to him. The world’s most famous bassist hoisted it aloft, as he often does at the end of his concerts, scribbled his name across the front with a hastily supplied Sharpie and passed it back to Madariaga.

Veteran rocker Sir Paul McCartney has unveiled a pavement plaque in his honour on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - almost 20 years after he was first nominated for one.

Sir Paul is the last of the Beatles to receive the honour; his star now sits outside the Capitol Records building, next to those of the other Fab Four members, Ringo Starr, George Harrison and John Lennon - and even a star for the band itself.

"Way back in history, in Liverpool when we were kids and we were listening to Buddy Holly and all the rock and roll greats. I would have never thought the day would come when I'd be getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame," said McCartney. "That was an impossible thing to happen."

Thursday also marks the anniversary of the Beatles historic first appearance on the "Ed Sullivan Show" on February 09, 1964.

For the past 40 years, McCartney has paved a path for himself with a successful solo career - taking home 14 Grammy awards along the way. His latest album, "Kisses on the Bottom" hit stores this week - a compilation of tributes to the singer's favorite performers, plus two new original songs.McCartney is also set to perform at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.

Comes a Bright Day is British writer-director Simon Aboud's first feature film, or first feature film to make it past production. Aboud's first script, The Beautiful Fantastic, brought him to the attention of the British filmmaking world: Everybody loved it, everybody wanted to work on it, but somehow it is still languishing in preproduction limbo. But things are looking up for Aboud, who began his career as a writer for an ad agency. Comes a Bright Day premieres in Berlin this week and has a very promising cast. Craig Roberts, who just won the BAFTA award for "Young British Performer," plays a hotel page who falls for jewelry store worker Mary, played by fashion darling Imogen Poots, and tries to ask her on a simple date. Alas for Smith, what seems like a simple love story turns into a romance-heist-coming of age film.

We caught up with Simon while we were in London to discuss preciousness (a much less Gollum-centered conversation than it sounds), whether filmmaking lived up to his childhood expectations, and what he's up to next.

EMMA BROWN: You've said that you consider yourself a storyteller, both in terms of your advertising campaigns and as a filmmaker. How do you start a story?

SIMON ABOUD: It very much depends. If it's a film story, a feature film, then it tends to be a very simple idea that I build on and very quickly try and find a character. There's time where it's sort of fermentation, it appears that you are not doing very much, but internally I think you're just testing something to see if it will actually work. Like the film I'm making at the moment, where I haven't actually written a word, I said to someone the other day, "I've done so much work on it." And they were like, "Where?" I try and add characters and work the arc of the character and the antagonist and all of that to see if it works. We kind of do the same thing for clients at [my advertising firm], but obviously it's different because it's a corporate world, so there has to be a more regimented structure than me walking away and saying "I'll come back when it's all scripted and shot."

BROWN: When did you first become interested in storytelling?

ABOUD: It's taken me 46 years to do what I've always wanted to do, which is to direct movies. That's what I wanted to do when I was nine. Making a film is not an easy club to get into; people don't let you drive the car unless there's a degree of confidence that you're going to drive the car. My history is advertising, I was a writer, and then I directed television commercials. I've been very lucky because I've gotten to do things—like advertising and [my advertising company,] Make Believe—that are about storytelling. In a way they've all been practice for ultimately what I would like to be doing everyday, directing feature films.

BROWN: How long has Comes a Bright Day been in the making?

ABOUD: That's kind of the odd thing. I wrote a script called The Beautiful Fantastic and it had one set of producers attached to it, and then another, and then it was in the Brit List [the British version of the Black List]. People really like it, [but this pre-production] it seemed to go on for years. So when people [would] says, "You can write a film, but it's not going to happen in a few minutes." I was like, "Yeah, yeah. I know that." But with Comes a Bright Day, I met with the producer and we made the film eight months later. The film I ended up making was set-up very, very quickly. I'm now in completely unchartered territory, you know what you're doing when you make the film, but then you hand it over to other people. I can't really do anything to affect anything anymore.

BROWN: Comes a Bright Day seems like a very British film; Paul Smith designed the costumes, it takes place in Westminster. How do you feel the movie will translate to an international audience?

ABOUD: I think the themes are universal. In a sense, the film is about preciousness and what the definition of preciousness really is. I don't think many of us know; preciousness is so one-dimensional now. It seemed like a very apt story to tell at the moment, because there has become something very garish about brands, it is very much about the price and how you wear it. We live in this world of this kind of super, super luxury—add more zeros to it and make it more desirable, desirable right down to [the point where] even people who haven't got any money at all want it. This sounds all preachy. I think the Britishness is just a stylistic thing because I just fell in love with this little bit of London: there is less than a square mile that fascinates me, down in St. James', where there are no big multinational corporate brands, [just] galleries and individual places. It is kind of forgotten in the scheme of things. People go [there to] buy these great artifacts and pieces of art. Where we shot, where we invented the jewelry shop, is the most extraordinary porcelain shop. Who buys antique porcelain? Someone does. I like the fact that someone does. Customers have to know where they are going; it's not like buying a ring at Tiffany's, [it's a] generational thing; you buy it so you can keep it, so someone else can get it.

BROWN: So you don't feel like the address of this square in St. James' is, in it's own way, a brand? That area in London is quite famous for luxury goods; and in the same way that you might go to Tiffany or Cartier for the name, you might wander down to Bond Street.

ABOUD: I see what you mean. Yeah. If I was really specific, I would say that it doesn't include Old Bond Street. A big theme is value versus price, it's not about the price tag, it's about the value of things, it's about the story, it's about where it comes from. Their pricelessness is much more to do with what they're about why they're here in the first place, their history. It just seemed a very apt place to create a love story, somewhere where you are surrounded by these kind of mementos of extraordinary acts of love. In that sense I think [the film] is incredibly universal.

BROWN: How did you cast Craig Roberts and Imogen Poots?

ABOUD: Imogen was in a list, if I had to write a list of all the girls, all the women that I wanted to play Mary, she was pretty much top of that list. Craig came for a reading and just killed it; I hadn't seen Submarine. A minute in, it was like, "That's him." He's fantastic. The thing about Craig is, and I'm not even sure Craig gets it, he just has this amazing ability when the cameras on.

BROWN:Did you have Imogen in mind when you were writing?

ABOUD: Yeah, absolutely. I liked what she'd done, and I thought she had a real spirit. On a lower-budget film, if you've got a great cast you've got a really great advantage, because it means you can get a momentum and you don't need as many takes.

BROWN: What surprised you about directing a feature film? Or did it go as you expected?

ABOUD: I'm not sure it would ever go as you expected. I don't think I had an expectation, I was like, "I wonder what today is going to bring." I loved doing it, I was so glad because all those years I've wanted to do it and I thought, "What if I don't like it?" I really enjoyed it. Every day is completely different, it's a series of problems that you're solving and there are an infinite number of ways that you can do that and you don't know what those problems are going to be.

BROWN: Sounds stressful!

ABOUD: I think it must be an eye of the storm thing; I was actually very calm. Calmness is good, especially on a low-budget film.

BROWN: What's up next?

ABOUD: I'm working on another script at the moment, which is based in LA. I've done all the fermentation so I'm now starting to put it together. It would be a step up for me, so it's exciting. That's where my heart is at the moment. LA kind of grows on me the more I go there. I always loved New York, and New York always felt like a second home to me, but I'm completely directionless, so New York is the perfect city for me. Even in the Financial District, just head north and you'll come out somewhere. But LA doesn't work like that. [In LA] you go to meet people, and they're pretty serious about it, they make films, so if they like what you do there's a chance that they're going to do it. Unfortunately, it's more difficult [in the UK], there's a lot more talk.

Four decades of hits and near misses

Introduction

Paul McCartney's 15th studio album, Kisses on the Bottom, is a collection of covers of Hit Parade-era songs that he loved while growing up. McCartney, of course, has compiled an incredible songbook of his own, and not just with his little band called the Beatles: 34 of his solo singles have made the U.S. Top 40. Some of them – "Band on the Run," "Live and Let Die" – are as ubiquitous as his greatest work with the old band. Following is a selection of the highest highs of McCartney's four-decade solo career, including some of his biggest hits and best album tracks.

'Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey'

After releasing his mostly demo-ish first solo album, McCartney, around the time of the Beatles' acrimonious breakup, McCartney found his solo stride on Ram, the 1971 followup (actually credited to Paul and Linda McCartney). The album featured the lovely ukulele tune "Ram On"; "Too Many People," a cranky swipe at his estranged writing partner, John Lennon; and the Number One hit "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," a classic McCartney pastiche that starts like a dream, grows jaunty and progressively weirder ("The butter wouldn't melt so I put it in the pie!") and rocks out on the fade.

'

Live and Let Die'

Settling in with his new band, Wings, McCartney was invited to contribute a theme song to the next film in the James Bond franchise. It's another trademark McCartney mini-symphony with orchestral audacity, the familiar ballad-y breakdown ("When you were young . . ."), even a bit of ersatz reggae.

'Helen Wheels'

After a couple of uneven albums, Wings hit the jackpot with Band on the Run, recorded with a skeleton crew under unusual circumstances in Nigeria. The advance single, the full-throttle rave-up "Helen Wheels," did not appear on the U.K. version of the album. It's a classic car song, named for Paul and Linda's Land Rover.

'Junior's Farm'

Like "Another Day," "Hi Hi Hi" and others, "Junior's Farm" is another of McCartney's non-album singles from his very productive first decade apart from the Beatles. It was recorded in Nashville.

'Listen to What the Man Said'

Wings' incredible mid-Seventies run continued with the tuneful lead single from the Venus and Mars album which, in keeping with McCartney's restlessness at the time, was recorded in New Orleans

'Maybe I'm Amazed'

The most fully realized song from McCartney's half-baked debut album, the big piano ballad "Maybe I'm Amazed" earned a second life as a centerpiece of the blockbuster triple-live album Wings Over America (1976).

'Say Say Say' (with Michael Jackson)

McCartney seemed to foreshadow the coming Eighties with soft hits like "Silly Love Songs" and "With a Little Luck." The new decade wasn't always kind to the former Beatle, who was now entering his forties; however, his hugely successful collaborations with Michael Jackson more than made up for both his growing fascination with synthesizers and his other high-profile collaboration with Stevie Wonder (on the cornball smash "Ebony and Ivory").

'You Want Her Too' (with Elvis Costello)

McCartney was rejuvenated toward the end of the Eighties, going back to basics with the oldies covers set known as the "Russian Album." That was followed by 1989's Flowers in the Dirt, which featured several collaborations with Elvis Costello, who gave the ex-Beatle the acerbic counterpoint he'd been lacking since he and John Lennon cut their ties.

'Every Night' (live)

Invited onto MTV's Unplugged in the show's early days, McCartney and his band insisted on sticking to the premise, playing without any amplification at all (unlike some other guests). One highlight was this version of one of the singer's signature unabashed love songs from the McCartney debut.

'Great Day'

After detours into symphonic and electronic music, McCartney returned to Beatlesque form yet again with the 1997 album Flaming Pie, which featured help from Ringo, a tribute to John and typically shimmering production from Beatles fanatic Jeff Lynne. "Great Day" is the kind of back-to-the-land acoustic number that McCartney has made one of his many specialties over the years.

'Jenny Wren'

McCartney's 13th solo studio album, 2005's Chaos and Creation in the Backyard, was produced by Radiohead regular Nigel Godrich. The cover photo shows a very young McCartney practicing guitar in his family's Liverpool backyard under their clothesline. Likewise, "Jenny Wren" distinctly recalls two classics from a much-younger McCartney: "Blackbird," with its delicate acoustic finger-picking, and the deft character study of "Eleanor Rigby."

'Only Mama Knows'

No, he's not going quietly. The aching strings that open this standout from McCartney's last studio album, Memory Almost Full (2007), are soon trampled by the feisty garage spirit of his excellent recent touring band.

Paul will perform at The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert, on Monday 4th June, Buckingham Palace. This historic concert, a celebration of The Queen's 60-year reign through music, will be attended by Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh and other Members of the Royal Family.

Staged in the stunning surroundings of the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace, the BBC and Gary Barlow have brought together leading talent from the world of music. The concert will include classic hits and one-off collaborations from artists including Shirley Bassey, Alfie Boe, Jools Holland, Jessie J, JLS, Elton John, Tom Jones, Lang Lang, Annie Lennox, Madness, Cliff Richard and Ed Sheeran.

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC One HD and on BBC Radio 2 in the UK and to millions around the world. Viewers in the United States will be able to watch exclusive highlights on ABC the next day.

Today a national ballot is launched through which 10,000 members of the public will be selected to receive free tickets to this unique event. People are invited to apply by logging on to www.bbc.co.uk/diamondjubilee or by post, anytime between 7th February and 2nd March. Tickets are not being allocated on a first-come first-served basis, sothere is as much chance of being selected if an application is made on 7th February as on 2nd March.

Paul McCartney whistles as he walks into the room where our interview is taking place. It's not a recognisable tune, but it's pleasant nonetheless -- and you just know there's a good chance he's making it up as he goes along.
This is a man who can literally create works of genius in his sleep -- 'Yesterday' came to him in a dream -- and that makes it all the more surprising that, for his latest project, he's opted to record what's predominantly a covers album.
Kisses on the Bottom -- which takes its peculiar title from a line in the opening track, Fats Waller's 'I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter' -- is a loungey collection of the songs of McCartney's youth and, he explains, the songs that laid the foundations for his later work.
"I grew up with this style of song. And I like that style very much, because it's well made, it's like a fine piece of jewellery -- all those songs from Gershwin or Cole Porter. If you're a songwriter, they're very well crafted. And I grew up with that sense of craft," he says.
"Then rock'n'roll happened, I met John (Lennon), and we started writing songs. So we went off into the rock'n'roll direction, but this was always in the background. One of the things about Beatles songs, if you analyse them, is that they're a little bit different from the normal rock'n'roll songs.
"They've got this . . . this background. So, if you think about some of the songs like 'Here, There and Everywhere', it's got a little introduction that rock'n'roll songs never had. But we said 'Oh, it'd be nice to write a little introduction, a little set-up, or a middle where it goes to different chords'."
There are few people better placed to talk about what makes perfect pop -- and it's a subject in which McCartney revels.
"I think a good melody, a memorable melody, really helps. People find themselves whistling it, or singing it in the shower, and they think: 'What's that?' And that's what's important, really, in a good pop song," he says, before comparing his craft to yet another physical trade.
"Technically, it's got to have structure; it's got to be like a well-made piece of furniture. It's got to hang together, to be well made. Then, I think, it's got to mean something -- and with the good songs, you can't help it. They just mean something."
While this affinity for all things old-timey has always been obvious, with Beatles tracks such as 'Honey Pie' and 'Your Mother Should Know' featuring obvious tips of the hat, this is McCartney's first time making a conscious effort to replicate the style of the era. And with the album's standout song, he has triumphed.
'My Valentine' is the type of song that die-hard Lennonists love to scoff at; a honey-sweet affair, painstakingly orchestrated and delivered with McCartney's baby-soft vocals -- it's his finest composition in some years, and fits in seamlessly with the 'authentic' oldies on the album.
"That song was actually really easy to write," he says. "We (Paul and new wife Nancy Shevell) were on holiday in Morocco, and it was raining. I said: 'It's raining -- it's going to spoil it.' But she said: 'It doesn't matter. It's great! We're having a good time.'
"So there was a piano in the hotel that the guy in the evening would play all the old songs on. So I was in that mood, and I just went there in the afternoon while the waiters were clearing up, and I played. And this song came out," he says, before singing the song's first two lines: "What if it rains, she didn't care."
"It sort of wrote itself, which all the best songs do. You can't believe it's coming out so easily, you know?"
Easy for you to say, Paul. But does it come that easily for today's crop of talent -- and are there any signs of a 21st-Century successor to The Beatles?
'Now it's difficult for bands, because so much has been done. It's very difficult to do what The Beatles did, you know, no matter how good they are. I think there's a lot of good bands, though -- Coldplay are a good, modern band. But I don't think they're as good as the Beatles! Foo Fighters are great . . . but they're not as good as The Beatles!
"I think it really would be difficult to do what The Beatles did, it's very difficult to get four people so in tune. When you think about it, any one of The Beatles could have had his own band. But what happened was you had the four of us in the one group -- and only four -- and I think that was a bit magical.
"It would be difficult to recreate that. I wish everyone well, and I hope someone can do it . . . but they won't be as good as The Beatles!"
It's a refreshingly optimistic attitude from someone who turns 70 in June -- and it's somewhat difficult to imagine what keeps him ticking.
"Sex and drugs. No, wait a minute, I don't mean that! No, you've got to love what you do. And if you're lucky enough to love what you do like I am -- and you are -- then that's the secret."

The face was awfully familiar. The main attraction at the tiny Rockwood Music Hall in New York on Wednesday night had the same small, hooked nose, slight pout and inquisitive eyes we’ve all seen on albums and magazine covers. IfJames McCartney sat next to you on a train, there’s a good chance you’d do a double-take, convinced you’d stepped into a time machine.
That James looks like a blond and balding version of Wings-era Paul McCartney is a blessing and a curse. There are colossal professional benefits to being the only son of Paul and Linda McCartney: it makes people queue up around the block to catch the first New York club gig by a singer-songwriter without much of a public profile. But it’s also inconceivable that those people can listen without prejudice. Perhaps this explains why it has taken James — who also performs in Asbury Park on Friday — is only starting his music career in earnest now, at 34.
It is certainly not because he lacks talent. He has a terrific singing voice that is quite different from his dad’s. His tenor — telegraph-clear and sharp as a switchblade — possesses just enough grit to give his pop-rock melodies traction. It radiates melancholy; quiet toughness, too. Backed by a four-piece combo, McCartney applied that voice to 10 original songs; these were of varying quality, but none was less than interesting. He also hit the bulls-eye with a spooky cover of Neil Young’s “Old Man” that was hard not to hear as a commentary on his relationship with his father.
The set, which lasted about 45 minutes, did not strain to impress: McCartney discharged his compositions with little fanfare, placing the emphasis squarely on the songs. On a small stage, surrounded by adoring Beatlemaniacs, curiosity seekers and those impressed by his EPs “Available Light” and “Close at Hand,” he seemed to drift in and out of the grip of a private experience.
Paul McCartney co-produced the EPs but didn’t sing or play on them. They sound like the Beatles only inasmuch as every pop-rock band of any stature has been influenced by the stylistic innovations of Paul and his bandmates. James McCartney is Beatles-influenced in the most direct way possible, but the only song of his that could really be called Beatlesque — the bouncy guitar rave-up “Moonstar” — sounds more like a mid-’70s George Harrison composition than anything from the Lennon-McCartney songbook. (“Spirit Guides,” another ’70s throwback, is reminiscent of Wings.)
McCartney led his band through energetic versions of “Moonstar” and “Spirit Guides” at Rockwood, but these songs were outliers. Most of the set deepened the haunted, otherworldly atmosphere that hovers over McCartney’s recordings. “My Friend” and “The Sound of My Voice” — which was decorated by synth xylophone, cymbal washes and shakers — felt like Neil Finn at his moodiest. “Mix” even displayed a grunge influence. McCartney played acoustic and electric guitar and piano, and excelled at each.
The music is in place; the showmanship is not. McCartney barely addressed the audience and did not return for an encore, even though the crowd clearly wanted one. He rarely smiled and at times looked like he was fighting an impulse to flee. His jacket was festooned with patches and held together by safety pins. The “A” on his red armband was too neatly drawn to stand for anarchy. It looked like a kid’s punk rock halloween costume, and undercut his authority.
These are minor quibbles. If McCartney continues to make his music public, he’ll surely figure out how to address them. He’s done the hard part already. Against long odds, he’s developed a personal voice. He stands in an enormous shadow and always will. But at Rockwood, we saw an artist who was coming into full possession of himself.

James McCartney is 34 and he’s the son of the world’s most accomplished, and famous rock star. Let’s face it–not easy if you are also a musician. So last night James made his New York debut with his group at the intimate Rockwood Club on Allen Street on the lower East Side. And he was great. He has Paul’s wide face, his late mom Linda’s blonde hair. His voice is sort of a combination of each, which makes his singing independent from the famous Beatle and but still imprinted with lots of personality. He is also naturally gifted musically–keyboards, guitar, whatever. James can rock it out, then switch to a haunting ballad. He and his band also made nice work of Neil Young’s “Old Man.”

Maybe some fans were looking for Dad last night, but he wasn’t there. Instead, James’s uncle, John Eastman (Linda’s brother) and John’s son, Lee (James’s first cousin) with wife Vanessa covered for the McCartney-Eastman clan. The small, friendly club was jam packed, and no one left disappointed. James is promoting a new CD called “The Complete RP Collection,” which you can buy or download online. It was produced by Paul McCartney and David Kahane. I give them credit–James has his 0wn style and sound.
On stage he is shy, which he can work on. He talks, but he’s still tentative. A few self deprecating Beatles jokes would loosen things up. I did ask him why he waited so so long to get his career started. His answer was thoughtful. “First, the loss of my mother was a lot,” he said, which was incredibly disarming. Linda McCartney’s death was tragic. “And then I wanted to be ready”–and not half baked. And guess what? He is. Nicely done.

Paul Mccartney is one of the biggest (and most active) rock legends of the past 50 years, will be celebrated by a suitably stellar lineup when he is honored at the Grammy Awards' annual MusiCares benefit concert on Feb. 10 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Among the artists who will be saluting McCartney in song -- his songs, to be exact -- are five current Grammy nominees, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Tony Bennett, Katy Perry and Alison Krauss & Union Station, featuring Jerry Douglas. They will be joined by a slew of past Grammy winners, among them Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Alicia Keys, James Taylor, Sergio Mendes, Duane Eddy and Neil Young with Crazy Horse.
"I'm going to do a song Paul wrote, 'Here, There and Everywhere'," Bennett told UT San Diego in a Monday interview (which will be published here in full as part of the Feb. 9 Night&Day). "I did it once before and it's a really good tune, a good song."
English comedian Edie Izzard will be the host of the event honoring McCartney, which is not televised but typically draws nearly as many stars as the actual Grammy Awards telecast two days later. Among the attendees at last year's MusiCares was Oceanside troubadour Jason Mraz, a two-time Grammy winner; his manager, former top San Diego concert promoter Bill Silva; and Joe Lamond, the president and CEO of the Carlsbad-based National Association of Music Merchants.
McCartney is being honored as the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year. the former beatle will cap off the evening with a performance of his own at MusiCares, which honors music legends for both their artistic achievement and their philanthropic work.
Past MusiCares honorees include Bennett, Young,Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Luciano Pavarotti, Bonnie Raitt, Paul Simon, Sting, U2's Bono, Natalie Cole, Phil Collins, David Crosby, Neil Diamond, Gloria Estefan, Aretha Franklin, Don Henley, Billy Joel, Brian Wilson and last year's honoree, Barbra Streisand.
A limited number of tickets are available for purchase to attend MusiCares,which usually draws a capacity audience of several thousand people. Proceeds from the event benefit MusiCares, which was established in 1989 by the Recording Academy (under whose auspices the Grammy Awards are presented).
MusiCares is designed to provide "a safety net of critical assistance for music people in times of need. The Beatles, John ,George and Ringo all had theirs in the last few years,and Paul was the only one who didn't have his ,now the ceremony will take place on Feb 9t at 2PM.

Paul McCartney abandons the guitar and pays homage to the music of his youth.

John Lennon famously disdained Paul McCartney’s music hall tendencies as “nice little folk songs for the grannies to dig”. But the Beatles’ appeal owed as much to solid roots in Tin Pan Alley tunemanship as rock bite and experimentalism, lessons in classic song structure embedded in them from their parent’s generation.

For his 35th post-Beatles album (counting Wings, classical, soundtrack and electronic works), McCartney pays homage to songs he first heard his father play on the family piano. The mood is of warm and cosy nostalgia, laced with the qualities of magic and emotion familiar from McCartney’s own works of whimsy. He loves this material, and it shows.

The apparently risqué title is cheekily lifted from the opening track, the Fats Waller classic I’m Going To Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, rolled out as a loose, light jazz flight with a rippling piano solo from Diana Krall. Surrounding himself with a band of stellar jazz players, for the first time in his career the multi-instrumentalist opts only for the role of vocalist.

We rarely think of McCartney as a singer, because he is obviously so much more. The focus on interpretation exposes the ageing in his voice as it thins out in his high register but he performs with delicacy and nuance: understated, acoustic-flavoured arrangements allow him the space to sing with soft precision. The lower register of Irving Berlin’s Always suits him, and he delivers this dedication to a long-awaited love with the smoky conviction of a besotted and bedazzled old roué. When he sighs “my heart is forever yearning,” on Home (When Shadows Fall) it is impossible not to believe him.

For all the playfulness of songs like the gently swinging Its Only A Paper Moon, McCartney never tips over towards archness or pastiche.

The greatest compliment you can pay McCartney’s two originals is that it is impossible to pick them out as contemporary songs amongst the standards.

Only Our Hearts may be unremarkable but for a trademark Stevie Wonder harmonica solo but My Valentine has the ring of a classic, with a gorgeous descending cadence and perfectly pitched romantic sentiment, gilded with a light fingered acoustic solo from Eric Clapton.

Unlike Rod Stewart and other ageing pop idols who have refashioned themselves as retro-crooners, McCartney has no imperative to build a new career covering old songs and the album is all the better for it. It sounds like a romantic gift to his new wife and a sentimental salute to his own childhood – a minor gem from a major talent. I suspect grannies won’t be alone in cherishing it.

MTA Board Loses Its Star Power

Nancy Shevell — or Lady McCartney, as one colleague called her — announced her resignation during Wednesday’s monthly meeting of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board.

Colleagues praised Shevell’s 11 years of service on the board. An executive with her family’s trucking firm, she was appointed in 2001 by then-Gov. George Pataki. Her term officially ended in 2010, but she remained on the board as a holdover.

Shevell’s public profile rose dramatically when she married Paul McCartney last year.

In the media reports about their relationship, the former Beatle was “accurately described as the greatest living performer in the world,” board member Mark D. Lebow noted during the meeting. Shevell, he said, was listed simply as “an MTA board member.”

As her profile grew, Lebow said that ”a little bit of your stardust sort of fell off on us.”

“I am so very emotional and sad right now,” Shevell said. She offered praise for MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota, who headed his first meeting of the board Tuesday, and encouragement to her colleagues for the “massive challenges ahead of you.”

Lhota also announced the departure of Pat Foye, who resigned his seat on the board after his appointment to lead the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

As a general rule, moving is not fun, but after all the hard labor, a celebration is in order.

Such was cause for Stella McCartney’s cocktail reception and dinner party Monday night, held at her shiny new SoHo store in Manhattan, where a generous portion of the shop’s elaborate herringbone parquet floor was given up to a long banquet table decorated with ice sculptures of the Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge. Where there’s a bridge, there’s usually water, so a moat filled with toy boats surrounded the elaborate centerpieces.

As for the guests, a strong “Saturday Night Live” contingent (Kristen Wiig, Fred Armisen, Jason Sudeikis and Lorne Michaels, an old pal of McCartney’s father) gathered, along with artists like Marilyn Minter and Cindy Sherman and McCartney loyalists like Liv Tyler and Naomi Watts.

Many of them were likely present for a similar occasion 10 years ago when McCartney opened her first store in the Meatpacking District. At the time, she was considered a trailblazer, a gentrifier of the neighborhood, which was still more synonymous with wholesale butchering than boutique retailing as it is today. The opening of the new store on Jan. 7 marked the closing of her 14th Street store, and perhaps the end of an era.

“The reality is our lease was up and we sort of questioned if we wanted to be down there or if we wanted to make a change, so we decided to come here,” said McCartney, over an omelette and canarino at the Mercer Hotel on Sunday. “I’ve always loved SoHo. I love the Meatpacking, too, but I think it was the right time for us to move into this kind of position. Maybe a little more grown up and taking it to the next level really in terms of our neighbors.” Her new Greene Street neighbors include Louis Vuitton, a temporary Apple store, Taschen and Tiffany.

McCartney added that the SoHo store allowed her to make a different statement than her previous space. It’s bigger by 1,200 square feet, for one thing, and its two floors are more richly decorated with gold Deco sculptures and Victorian finishes compared to the spare, squeaky clean look of the Meatpacking store, which, like most of the real estate there, had the feel of a gutted garage.

An evolution is understandable. A lot has happened in the decade that’s passed between McCartney’s first retail endeavor and her latest. SoHo is her 17th stand-alone store, with the 16th bowing simultaneously at the Bal Harbour Shops near Miami. “We’re definitely focusing on retail,” said McCartney, who, without getting specific on strategy, noted there are plans for a Barcelona store in the spring, as well as a second London outpost on Fulham Road in Brompton Cross scheduled to open next month. There, the format will be broken up into three spaces — one to house the main collection, another for the kids’ line and a separate but adjacent one for the first-ever Adidas by Stella McCartney store. “It’s a reflection of the world of Stella,” her publicist chimed in.

That’s not a bad way to compartmentalize the designer herself. There’s the sporty Stella, who’s held a long-standing contract with Adidas and has been chosen as the official designer for the British Olympic teams for London 2012. Then there’s the glamorous designer of expensive clothes who reconciles herself against her alter ego — devoted mother of four. The result is a strict time manager, who will only concede to short stints away from her family. She flew in straight from a holiday in Jamaica with them for this four-night trip to New York, which was all business, except for a break to watch Charles Barkley host “Saturday Night Live.” But McCartney is a pro at making work look like play.

An hour before she hosted Monday’s dinner, she was in the thick of a meet and greet at her pre-fall presentation held at the West Village restaurant One If by Land, Two If by Sea — a fancy, romantic spot that’s known as a place where couples go to get engaged. McCartney took over the whole townhouse, invited her guests in for an open bar and live music, while the models giggled in casual vignettes, playing backgammon and pool, dressed in tailored coats with caped sleeves, riffs on traditional equestrian gear and pieces printed with vintage monograms.

It’s been a few years now that McCartney has been staging these productions, “long enough for it to be completely normal for us,” she said. Conceived as a cute, carefree standout in a sea of off-season showroom appointments, the presentations masked as parties belie a lot of time, money and planning, which is likely why most designers stick to the showroom.

“It’s very funny, the industry. It seems very old fashion to me to look at it like, ‘We have a show in Paris and that’s that,’” said McCartney. “To me, it’s sort of like in the day and age we live, I want to make my online shoot and look book look like a magazine. I want to make a language.” All the effort implies the increasing importance of the off-seasons, though a question about the size and growth of pre-fall from a business perspective was deflected. “I never really focus on that,” said McCartney. “I let other people do it. I like to try to remove myself from that a little in that I have all the information of what we want to achieve but I’m not focused on that side.”

She acknowledged that the pre-seasons carry more pressure saleswise since they’re on the floor the longest amount of time, but that doesn’t preclude having a little fun. “My entire career, it’s always been like, oh, [pre-fall is] just a selling collection. It has so many boxes to check and it becomes such a chore and I just hated that. There’s more and more [to do] for all of us. I look at it not only from my point of view but from [editors’] point of view, like, why would you just want to go look at another showroom? What a drag.”
